The captivating sequel to the award-winning The Day the Angels Fell

Abra Miller carries a secret and a responsibility she never expected.

Before the Tree of Life, everything in Abra Miller’s life had been predictable. Safe. Normal. But after the Tree, everything has felt fragile . . . like holding a soap bubble in the palm of her hand. After years of fruitless searching for the next Tree, she begins to wonder if it was nothing more than a vivid dream.

Now sixteen, Abra finds a clue to the whereabouts of the next Tree of Life when an ominous woman—who looks exactly like a ghost from her past—compels her to travel to New Orleans where she’ll find one of seven gateways between this world and Over There. But she’s not the only one interested in finding the gateway. There’s also a young man searching for his father and sister, who escaped through it years before. As Abra enters the Edge of Over There and begins her pursuit of the Tree once more, she doesn’t know whom to fear or whom to trust.
She’s also starting to think that some doorways should never be opened.

The Edge of Over There – My Review

“He sprinted down the hall and into the outside world. It was dusk, and the fresh air felt wonderful. Everything out there was alive, especially after his time in the dark closet. Hope lived there, in that time of day before the birds began their evening song.”

First, I’ve been waiting for this second book since I read The Day the Angels Fell in 2017.

Second, here is my review of the first book: https://forgottenwinds.com/2017/09/23/the-day-the-angels-fell-my-review/

Third, I love books that when I see them on my bookcase makes me recall fondly the story enveloped in their pages.

Fourth, the cover of this book is a work of art.

Shawn Smucker has once again created a truly exceptional tale that follows his first book, The Day the Angels Fell.  As a reader, I was wanting Abra’s story to continue as soon as I finished the last chapter of the first book. In The Edge of Over There, I finally was taken along on Abra’s continued journey.

In this book, Abra must find another Tree of Life in order to kill it. Some of the story is set in New Orleans where Abra encounters Leo who lost his sister, Ruby when their dad took her to another world to save her life. A lot of darkness is encountered along the way for the characters, some history is revealed, and truths discovered.

“A child. A child can become a young adult in four years. A friendship can grow faster than trees or vanish altogether in that time. The world is always changing all around us, molecules shifting from this to that, so that in four years, what is recognizable? What could possibly remain the same under the erosion of so much flowing time?”

What makes The Edge of Over There truly remarkable is how Shawn brings each part of the character’s moments to life. Shawn’s gift of writing puts readers right into the story and makes you feel what those characters are feeling and sensing on every step of their journey. I guess the right word I’m looking for is poetry. The writing style is like poetry in motion with the telling of the story that I never tired of.

It’s a tale that downright enveloped me to continue reading. It’s a story that I’ll long remember. Of course, I may never look at trees the same way ever again. I’m still wondering what happened to that cat Sam saved.

Thanks, Shawn for one of the most enjoyable books so far in 2018.
