Came home yesterday and saw my purple bearded iris had bloomed. My heart smiled.
This set of irises came from a patch in Foard County, Texas. Purple irises were planted long ago by the wives of early ranchers and farmers, especially those of Dutch or German descendant living here in Texas. My own great great, grandmother did this in Lynn County, Texas on her farm and they were planted at her gravesite.
These particular irises came from a planting at Good Creek in Foard County where an old bunkhouse stood in one side. To the delight of nature’s music beavers swam and slapped their tails across the creek from the bunkhouse giving vital water to the other wildlife and filling the canopy of soapberry trees with songs and calls of birds.
This singular bloom is sign of a blessing to finish the story of how beavers most likely got back to Texas after their eradication in the late 1800s. An illustrated children’s book.
Thanks Bettie B. for the gentle push to get the story out. Last year my grief drowned me with the loss of Azrael. While your irises bloomed in April 2023, I could not even think that far ahead.
I’ll get back to the story! 🦫🦫

Wow! Just in time for Easter! Gorgeous.
