Do You See a Flower?

Antelope Milkweed

Many eyes go through the meadow, but few see the flowers in it.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson

Upon first glance you think this is a weed. No pretty petals swaying in the wind. Just a ball of green.

If you look closely, the flowers are there. Each one makes the ball. Unfortunately, no it does not have a fragrance. It does have a protective white sap that can leave a chemical burn on your fingers if you break any of the stems.

This unremarkable flower gem is vital to the continued survival of Monarch Butterflies. Monarchs lay their larvae on the stems of this milkweed. The milkweed gives the larvae everything it needs for them to grow into more Monarch butterflies.

If people keep mowing them over, pulling them up, or using chemicals to get rid of them – then you can almost predict saying goodbye to beloved Monarchs.

When you see Antelope Milkweed or any other milkweeds, respect them for what they offer to our insect companions.

There is a reason for everything in nature.

Have a fab day. 🤍 💚
