character interview

Interview with the man, (we’ll call him Sir), who grew up loving the old Oak Tree in Heart of the Oak by J.L. Novinsky

Interviewer:   Hello Sir, it is very nice to meet you!  You have a long history with this old tree, would you like to tell us about it?
Sir:  Of course!  When I was a child, we lived in the country.  Friends were scarce back then.  One day, my father brought me across the field to play among the roots of this wonderful tree.  He hung an old tire from that branch there, and when I got older, I would spend my summers swinging and climbing.  This old tree was my best friend in those days.
Interviewer:   Then there was some kind of tragedy?
Sir:   Yes, it was bad.  There was a storm, and our house caught fire and burned to the ground.  Really terrifying for everybody.  As we escaped down the road, I could see the fire reaching my tree and I was heartbroken.  We had to move away, but I never forgot my friend.
Interviewer:  That must have been so difficult for a child.  Was the tree destroyed along with your house?
Sir:   Actually, no.  Years later, I came back to the site, and found that nothing had been done to the land, the field, and the tree was still standing!  There was a bad burn on it, but it seemed healthy and strong.  So, there was only one thing I could do!
Interviewer:   And that was?
Sir:   I had gotten married and lived across town.  We had a son by that time.  I had to get back to my friend, so I bought the land, built a new house, and moved right back in.  So now my young boy has a swing hanging from that beautiful old tree, and he will grow up climbing it, just as I did!
Interviewer:   I love full circle!
Sir:   That tree will always be in my heart and part of my family!
