Enter John David Dothan (The Representative). The world’s hippest legislator is back, but he is a changed man. Post-stroke Dothan dons an eccentric cane and is married to his former chief of staff, Tryphena Taylor. The two lovers reside peacefully tucked away in a country cottage with their rescued cat. But they are swimming against the tide.
Caught between the past and the future, the rural and the urban, the representative is trapped in a no-win situation both politically and emotionally. When a constituent brings to his attention a mysterious ‘retention pond’ things grow increasingly murky. The waters turn completely dark when Dothan learns his forbidden first love, former State Senator Rachael Logan has been hospitalized.
Armed with only his cane and sidekick, Mason Dixon (The District Manager), who serves as his new Chief of Staff, Dothan sets aside the ambiguities of politics and love in search of clarity and righteousness. But the cost of doing the right thing might not just be his young marriage…but Tryphena’s life.
“Matt Minor has great attention to detail and makes everything from the setting to the characters feel very real. It makes for a wonderfully written and very suspenseful novel.” – Momma and Her Stories

The Water Lord – My Book Review
“Life rarely introduces itself or sends a calling card in advance, and when it does, it’s rare that we realize it.”
Yes – the Texas State Capital Building is immense. Often the best way to navigate it is by asking the Texas Department of State Troopers for directions.
Yes – there are places in East Texas where you can drive through a pine forest on both sides of the road.
Yes – a wife can have second thoughts about her marriage.
I thoroughly enjoyed and loved this book for many reasons.
First, notable reason was the detailed accuracies Matt references are dead on like referencing barbeque legend, C.B. Stubb, to the Driskill Hotel in Austin, and the never-ending Texas State Capital Building. Of course, any book that references Joy Division one of my favorite Goth bands is a winner.
Second, and this is the best part – it is one of the most relatable human books I’ve read in a long time. The story is suspenseful because of the murders and political intrigue of both local and state politics but it so much more. It is the dialogue, language, and emotions Matt uses to tell this story is what makes it so real and ultimately relatable.
It is a book you can knock out on a cold or sunny weekend or on a trip across the country. It grabbed me at the beginning and kept my attention until the very end. There was never a break in the flow of the story even between the main characters telling of their stories back and forth. Everything flows perfectly. Just when I thought I figured out who killed who that’s when the story really turned into deeper intrigue.
You will not be disappointed with this book. Matt has a talent for writing true human emotions to carry his characters. Plus, his gift of incorporating true Texas accuracies makes his stories even more real.
Thanks, Matt!
“A man is what he does, Tryphena. Not what he says, not what he feels, and certainly not how he looks, but what he does!”
