A Perfect Read Along on Why Gardens Are Important – My Book Review
Thank you, Garden is a picture-perfect read-along children’s book on why gardening is so essential. I remember picking green beans, okra, tomatoes, peas, cantaloupe, blackberries, figs, squash – just to name a few with my grandmothers. I knew from an early age that gardening was important because vegetables and fruits did not all come from the market and okra was always sticky and prickly.
Author, Liz Garton Scanlon created a children’s book that shows not only the importance of a garden, but that patience, fun, and community helps a garden prosper for all to enjoy its bounties’. Kids need dirt to play in and that the elements of sun and water are needed not only for gardens but for all of us. One of the best parts of this book is showing that gardens are the perfect beginnings for children to experience awesome nature like worms, frogs, and bees.
Thank you, Garden presents that the best gifts are the ones you work and play at. It definitely opens the path to have conservations with kids about gardens and where food comes from.
The artwork by illustrator, Simone Shin reminds me of Precisionism art making the illustrations easy on young reader’s eyes because it has a lot of clean-cut and simple forms.

Liz Garton Scanlon is the author of many beloved books for kids, including the brand new Thank You, Garden, as well as the Caldecott Honor book All the World and others, including several co-authored with her pal Audrey Vernick. Scanlon also wrote the middle-grade novel The Great Good Summer and is published in numerous poetry anthologies. She serves on the faculty of the Vermont Faculty of Fine Arts and is a frequent and popular presenter at conferences and festivals. Find more about her life and work at

Terrific review. I think many of us have fond memories of Gardening with Grandma. Maybe that’s the title of another book. 🙂 And I’m with you on not being fond of picking okra.
