Where Wild Things Persist

Spotted beebalm

The Llano Estacado is not empty, nor is it merely a stretch of barren earth and endless plowed fields. Beneath its vast skies, life still stirs quietly among the dust and wind.

Does wildlife struggle here? Without question. The rains are scarce, the winds relentless, and the summer heat unforgiving. Survival on the High Plains is rarely easy.

And yet, despite it all, wildlife endures. It adapts. It persists. The creatures of this landscape have learned to live where many would see only hardship, carrying on with a resilience shaped by the prairie itself.

Here are a few glimpses from last week — small reminders that even in the harshest places, wild things still find a way.

My favorite – a bullsnake crossing the road. Am I the only one who jumps out of trucks and photographs them?
