A Review – Comfort Plans
“As Cornbread snored from under the shade of a cypress limb, she doubted he’d ever prove his worth as a security guard.”
When I read the initial synopsis of Comfort Plans, I was intrigued because the main character investigated the histories of historic structures. This hit home with me because of my investigative work on trying to save a historical ranch complex in West Texas, so I immediately identified with the main character, Colette from the start, especially after I began reading the book.
A few chapters into the book Cornbread was woven into the story, which I had to relate to Azrael, my rescued dog. After hearing his story she thoroughly approved of the book because of how Cornbread came into the picture. Could he be a ghost dog? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
But, there’s more to the story than just Cornbread and researching the back-stories of buildings. Author Kimberly Fish weaves a book written in her own tone of the story of Colette finding herself after her grandfather brings back her ex-husband to head the family architectural firm. Throughout the story, she finds a new love, a ghost, a skeleton, old historical German letters, Cornbread, and the real reason why her grandfather did not betray her with her ex. The latter involves the IRS.
The hidden German letters in the fireplace firebox add the finest part to this story, after Cornbread of course. The letters were from a man named Colin who cared very deeply about the woman he intended on marrying once he reached her outside of Comfort, Texas. The letters themselves are intriguing enough to carry the entire story and they add a historical romantic depth.
Comfort Plans is a good weekend read that will draw readers into Collette’s winding life of work, finding love, Cornbread, and discovering if the letters lead to a hidden treasure.
